Weekend
without borders

A coordinated crime crackdown this past weekend pooled the
resources of several law enforcement agencies in an unprecedented effort,
said Lt. James Sivak of the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Ashtabula post.
Jurisdictional borders that can complicate law enforcement were set aside
during the three-day initiative that began Thursday, Sivak said.
"(Boundaries) can compromise what we can do to achieve success," he said.
"Traffic problems and crime know no boundaries.
"We broke down a tremendous number of barriers this weekend," Sivak said.
"(All departments) have resources, and those resources were one for three
days."
The weekend program, two months in the planning, allowed several departments
to put extra personnel on the road, Sivak said. "Every agency in the county
put as many resources as they could on the streets of Ashtabula County," he
said.
The result was a three-day effort that resulted in nearly 1,500 traffic
stops that resulted in 27 drunken-driving citations and helped shut down
three suspected methamphetamine labs.
Fifteen departments and offices lent assistance to the program, which was
the first of it's kind in the area. "It's never been accomplished before in
this area on this scale," Sivak said.
