ROCK CREEK — Trumbull, Ashtabula Group drug task force (TAG) officers and county sheriff’s deputies made an early Thursday morning arrest of a 32-year-old Rock Creek man on a drug related charge. The arrest of Nathan C. Kowatch, 32, of 3740 Route 534, came after a covert drug buy by a TAG undercover officer.

Kowatch was arrested shortly after 6 a.m. on charges of aggravated trafficking in prescription drugs, a third-degree felony. At Kowatch’s house, officers confiscated a large quantity of Oxycontin, a prescription drug.

As Kowatch was being arrested his father, Tyler C. Kowatch, 51, of 3739 Route 534 appeared at the scene. When the elder Kowatch was ordered to stop any interference, he refused to obey the officers’ warnings, reports show.

After several orders to halt, the elder Kowatch and several deputies ended up in a tussle on the ground. Kowatch reportedly bit one deputy on the thumb before he could be handcuffed, then placed in a cruiser.

Both father and son were taken to county jail overnight. Tyler C. Kowatch was charged with assault of a police officers, a fourth-degree felony; obstructing official police business, a second-degree misdemeanor; and resisting arrest, a first-degree misdemeanor.

The pair appeared separately Friday before Western County Court Judge Richard Stevens for bond setting.

Stevens set Nathan Kowatch’s bond at $20,000 cash, surety or 10 percent. He was unable to post bond and returned to jail.

Bond for the elder Kowatch was set for a total of $6,500 cash, surety or 10 percent on all his charges. He was able to post bond and released. Preliminary hearings for both defendants are set for Jan. 7 in Stevens’ court.
