ROCK CREEK — Trumbull, Ashtabula Group drug task
force (TAG) officers and county sheriff’s deputies made an early Thursday
morning arrest of a 32-year-old Rock Creek man on a drug related charge. The
arrest of Nathan C. Kowatch, 32, of 3740 Route 534, came after a covert drug
buy by a TAG undercover officer.
Kowatch was arrested shortly after 6 a.m. on
charges of aggravated trafficking in prescription drugs, a third-degree
felony. At Kowatch’s house, officers confiscated a large quantity of
Oxycontin, a prescription drug.
As Kowatch was being arrested his father, Tyler
C. Kowatch, 51, of 3739 Route 534 appeared at the scene. When the elder
Kowatch was ordered to stop any interference, he refused to obey the
officers’ warnings, reports show.
After several orders to halt, the elder Kowatch
and several deputies ended up in a tussle on the ground. Kowatch reportedly
bit one deputy on the thumb before he could be handcuffed, then placed in a
cruiser.
Both father and son were taken to county jail
overnight. Tyler C. Kowatch was charged with assault of a police officers, a
fourth-degree felony; obstructing official police business, a second-degree
misdemeanor; and resisting arrest, a first-degree misdemeanor.
The pair appeared separately Friday before
Western County Court Judge Richard Stevens for bond setting.
Stevens set Nathan Kowatch’s bond at $20,000
cash, surety or 10 percent. He was unable to post bond and returned to jail.
Bond for the elder Kowatch was set for a total
of $6,500 cash, surety or 10 percent on all his charges. He was able to post
bond and released. Preliminary hearings for both defendants are set for Jan.
7 in Stevens’ court.
