CHAMPION — Numerous marijuana plants and thousands of dollars worth of
hydroponic equipment covered the front lawn of a house at 4015 N. Park Ave.
Tuesday afternoon following a raid by the Trumbull Ashtabula Geauga Law
Enforcement Task Force.
Detective Sgt. Jeff Orr of the task force said 15 to 20 plants growing in
pots were found in the back yard and the rest of the confiscated plants and
equipment came from an ‘‘elaborate hydroponics’’ setup in the basement.
‘‘The plants in the back yard were clearly visible from neighboring
properties,’’ he said.
The owner made a voluntary confession to task force members, Orr said. A
woman and two children also were removed from the property, he said.
He would not release identities until charges are filed. Orr said charges
are pending lab results to determine the quantity and weight of the
marijuana confiscated, but likely will include felony counts of cultivation
and possession of marijuana.
The task force received an anonymous tip of ‘‘suspicious activity’’ with
possible marijuana plants on the property, Orr said. Task force members
walked on a nearby property to see what was visible and spotted two large
potted marijuana plants growing behind the garage, he said.
After a search warrant was obtained, additional marijuana plants were found
on the property and inside the home.
Orr said about 90 plants were confiscated. He said other items included
fertilizer, a water filtration system and high-powered sodium lights.
‘‘We are talking about thousands of dollars worth of equipment here,’’ Orr
said.
Champion police assisted the task force at the scene.
